American civil war
If you wish to hear about one of the bloodiest civil wars ever happened in America, then you should know about the American civil war. Fought between the Union and the rebelling Confederate forces, the American civil war took the lives of about 620,000 soldiers on both sides and also accounted for a lot of civilian casualties as well.
Slavery – The root cause of the civil war
By the time the Civil War had broken out, a lot of states were feeling the pinch of the tyrannical slavery system. Under the stewardship of Jefferson Davis, all these states formed one united front, and called themselves as the Confederate States of America. They rebelled against the Union Forces, which represented the state government of the United States of America.
The attack on Fort Sumter
The whole action on the American civil war started with the Confederate Forces launching a surprise attack on Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter was a military installation for the Union Forces, and by this attack, the Confederate forces clearly caught their opponents napping. In fact, by the time the Union forces could realize what had dawned on them, the Confederate forces had taken rapid strides in their victory march.
What helped them immensely was the fact that President Abraham Lincoln supported the cause of the Confederates clearly and vehemently. In fact, it was his Emancipation Proclamation that provided a perfect launch pad for all the attacks of the Confederate forces. The South forces or the confederate forces led by Robert G Lee went about their task by claiming a lot of victories in the East.
British support to the Confederate forces
The arms and ammunitions support to the Confederate Forces was provided by the British Government then. Until the time, the British Government was able to provide ammunition support to the Confederate forces, the battles were fought on an even keel. Once they stopped in doing so, the lack of personnel and sophisticated firearms hurt the march of the Confederate forces.
In due course of time, it was these factors that resulted in the collapse of the resistance of the Confederate forces, which finally culminated with the surrender of Robert Lee. But by that time, the rebelling forces had achieved their objective, and soon, slavery was abolished in the United States of America.
The American civil war though saw two significant developments – 1) The induction of civil war nurses, and 2) The sophistication in firearms and ammunitions. Quite a lot of the developments in the firearms space would stay on to result in further advancements in weaponry.
